Solution is to remove copies of app off external drives.
It will complain about more than one copy of the app, and may not load. (Just out of curiosity: do other password managers do that? Anyone?) Only issue is that it gets confused if you have a clone, or TM backup, with the app on it. App still works exceptionally well, syncs seamlessly between devices, and it is so easy to share logins with others. Family subscription is probably the best deal out there. I'm used to the subscription now, but I get that it's a turnoff for many.
